Coffeetime
Once upon a time there was a farmstead, surrounded by beautiful norwegian nature, right next to a lake – as crystal blue as the Briksdalen glacier on a sunny day.
We have taken care of this place, so that you can experience the same surroundings and stunning views that we live in every day. We hope you’ll enhoy it as much as we do, and we look forward to welcoming you!
All the best from Helene and Espen
Aarneset farmstead is an old sheriff's farm along Oppstrynsvatnet with a lot of history. The old houses vary in age - from the 1700s and 1800s. The sheriff's office was operated on the farm until the beginning of the 20th century. People came to the farm by steamboat to get in touch with the sheriff, who was also the mayor and a member of parliament.
Today, the sheriff’s great-great-grandson Espen Aarnes and Helene Maurset own and operate the farm with sheep farming and accommodation – in four rental units.
A visit to the sauna always feels great after swimming in Oppstrynsvatnet.
Our sauna is open year-round, bringing joy to everyone from ice bath enthusiasts in Nordfjord to those simply looking for something fun to do in Stryn during the summer. It's not proven (yet), but we believe we might have the most beautiful view in Norway from our sauna.
Come and see for yourself, and decide if it's true!

Aarneset Farmstead is a Farmstead with Soul and History. Underneath you can read its story, as told by Lisbeth Årnes – the great-grandchild of the sheriff who lived here in the early 1900s.
Old houses in Nordfjord standing in a row are not an uncommon sight. Like many others, these have varying ages from the 1700s to the 1800s.
The smallest house to the east is perhaps the oldest. It is divided into two parts and built with stone, used as a bakehouse, smoking room, and scullery. In the summer, the residents moved all kitchen activities to the bakehouse because its thick walls and grass roof made it a cool place to be.
Typical for this house is that it is bound together with two braces and has a very special oven made of stone. The smoke would rise to the ceiling and out the smoke vent, which is why the ceiling is black with soot to this day. Everyone in the family lived in this house. This is where they worked on crafts in the winter, slept, and ate their meals. The house has always had long tables and benches and is frequently used for larger gatherings today.
The other half is made of timber. Here we find a bedroom upstairs and an office downstairs – used by two generations from the 1800s until the 1960s. Sigmund and Kolbein Aarnes used the offices, in their roles as parliament members, mayor, and sheriff. Therefore, an office was important on the farm and had to be centrally located in Stryn. At that time, there was a steamship that sailed on the lake and docked at the pier in Aarnes. The Nordfjordstova was typical of the building style in the 1800s, but unfortunately, many have had to make way for new and modern houses.
